An Update on Camp Emmaus and the Green Valley Fire
Many of you might have heard this week about the Green Valley Fire that started Tuesday afternoon between Park Rapids and Menahga. On Tuesday, a group of staff was evacuated from Camp Emmaus as we were in a five mile radius of the fire. Officials have been fighting this fire since Tuesday and have made massive efforts to get it under control.
We wanted to update you all after a public meeting in Menahga we attended Wednesday night about the status of the fire, process, etc. We were given the map of the outline of the fire and so far it appears that Emmaus has not been affected. All of our structures are intact. The fire is a little close to some of our back land but currently does not appear to have affected our property, a huge blessing. The evacuation we were under has been lifted as of noon today (Thursday) and we hope to get out there soon to see our land. We are very optimistic and hopeful that our land is alright.
A little more about the fire that we heard last night, it has affected 7,100 acres. 12 residences, 2 commercial properties and 41 outbuildings have been destroyed. The fire is currently 25% contained. There has been over 40 fire departments represented in this effort! They are continuing to use planes with water and a new team, "HotShot" which is the elite in this situation is coming today to help. They are hopeful that the weather today will allow them to keep up the good work on the fire.
People have been working so hard and coming together for this amazing effort. It was unbelievable to listen to everyone on the panel and impressive what they have been able to do in this situation. We have been fortunate so far, but I ask that you continue to pray for those volunteers, personnel and those who have lost and have been affected by the fire.
To view the area of the fire they have posted a map: http://mnics.org/wpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/greenvallyfire.pdf
